Shhh

2023, 65’ x 14’ x 7’ tall | 19.812 x 4.26 x 2.13m, post-industrial medical-grade plastic, fiber optics, motion sensors + hardware

This permanent outdoor public art piece is at Metropolitan Park in Arlington, Virginia at Amazon’s HQ2 and is now part of the Arlington County Permanent Public Art collection.

Shhh is comprised of 36 3D printed sculptures, each with internal fiber optics allowing it to glow at night. Shhh was inspired by the Jack-O-Lantern mushroom, (Omphalotus Illudens) commonly found in the Virginia woodlands near Metropolitan Park. It is one of ~80 known bioluminescent mushrooms, which, like many bioluminescent mushrooms, only glows at certain stages of its development. Shhh also integrates motion sensors so that the internal lights subtly respond to movement. Their lights breathe at the pace of a calm human breath, increasing softly in brightness whenever motion is detected in the park.

Each sculpture in Shhh either originated as a mushroom found on a foray in nature which was 3D scanned and scaled up, or a hand-sculpted object that was 3D scanned and scaled up to be a friend to its neighboring fungi.
